Ballarat | Victoria

Ballarat is just over an hours drive from Melbourne. This town has enjoyed a rich and prosperous heritage thanks to the Gold Rush. By 1855, Ballarat had encountered a population explosion to the tune of 100,000 people. Many impressive buildings were constructed thanks to the wealth generated by the diggings.

To really picture how Ballarat was in the gold mining days, you must visit Sovereign Hill. It’s where Victoria’s 1850s gold rush heritage comes alive. Wander around the site and you’ll encounter a recreated and functioning township and see what life was like during one of the most exciting eras of Australia's history. Sovereign Hill is great fun no matter what age you are. It’s indoors, outdoors, above-ground and below-ground, giving you great variety and ensuring a fun day for everyone.

Directly across from Sovereign Hill, is the charming Mercure Ballarat Hotel. This stylish country retreat set amidst landscaped gardens has so many great features to keep the whole family entertained. The Mercure Ballarat Hotel grounds are also home to this game it is a mix of tennis, squash and chess - Royal Tennis. With only about 50 courts left around the world, this game is one of the oldest ball sports still being played today.

This hotel offers a great number of things to do within the confines of the property and if getting active isn’t your style – book into the Ballarat Santuary Day Spa for luxury pampering. It’s on site and its total bliss. By night, there’s no reason to head out on the town because there’s a fantastic restaurant and bar right at your doorstep with cosy fireplaces for those chilly evenings.

Ballarat makes for the perfect family weekend escape or family holiday!
