If you ever dreamed of catching a wave then why not learn how to surf? The Port Macquarie Surf School provides all equipment and caters for all levels of ability and fitness. Programs focus on teaching the skills and techniques of surfing initially from the beach and then in the water with how to handle yourself and your surfboard in the ocean. You may even get the chance to be taught by local surfing guru, Peter Hudson or either of his sons, Grant and Wayne.
If you want another way to experience Port’s beautiful beaches, Port Macquarie Camel Safaris is great fun. Local Cameleer John Hardy has been based here in Port for years and has a great understanding of camels. Though the size of the camels may be a little intimidating at first, once your up and riding you quickly discover that these animals are lovely and relaxed and aren’t that frightening after all.
Travel north on the Pacific Highway and stop at Nambucca Heads which is half way between Port Macquarie and the Queensland border. This seaside town brings back memories of camping as a kid and spending all day floating in the water. The entrance here is beautiful and the water is pristine.
The Nambucca Rock Wall is covered in graffiti, but not the kind of graffiti you don’t want to see. The rocks are highly decorated by local artists and passing tourists. The tradition started in the early 80’s and is now a significant visitor attraction. Anyone is welcome to grab some paint and leave a message.
Coffs Harbour is nestled between a high mountain backdrop and dozens of unspoiled beaches. One place to check out is the Surfing Museum that is run by the international surfing legend and master of the big waves - Scott Dillon. Pop in to check out some iconic surfing memorabilia and chat to Scott who has more than a few tales to tell.
