The Royal Australian Mint is a national treasure. Officially opened in February1965 by His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh with the first task to produce new coins for the introduction of decimal currency in 1966.
Today, the recent $65 million transformation of the facilities, officially opened by The Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC is an architectural and engineering showpiece, offering visitors an insightful and innovative experience of the inner workings of the factory.
There are important collections which span Australia’s history, from coins that were used at the time of the First Fleet, to the Holey Dollar and Dump, which are the only Australian coins which have had their ‘legal tender’ status removed, or been ‘demonetised’, or the incredibly rare 1930 Penny, to coins that never quite made it out of the Mint.
The popular Royal Australian Mint is a great destination for the whole family to experience, fabulous interactive exhibits, fascinating historic displays, important collections, hands-on activities, a well-stocked gift shop or making your very own dollar coin!
